Initial Rendering of the Futureport “Portal Room”

I still have a ways to go before this is perfect, but I thought I’d share where I am. I’m curious how to make the portal scenes glow with that distinctive green ting – obviously, I haven’t quite nailed it yet.

  1. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Amy. Amy said: Holy cow. This is beautiful. #Horizons RT @HrznsRsrrctd: Initial rendering of the Futureport "Portal" room. http://bit.ly/dSvjqj [...]

  2. I wonder how much the ambient light changed or modulated based on the position of the moving ‘kaleidoscope’ windows? The distinctive shade of light could be a combination of each portal window combined in the overall space.

I have no idea how you render the graphics and adjust the light in the space, but if there’s a way to do that from multiple sources then that’s what I’d try.

  3. Oh, and one more thought. It’s sad how those images in the kaleidoscopes seemed to degrade over time. The once-vivid colors faded and became sorta blah before the end.

How early are the images you’re using?

  4. Amazing stuff Chris… I’m hooked!

The portals in your rendering seem much brighter than I remember… maybe dimming them down (or lighting them from behind?!) would help the overall scene.

In VToad, I spent a ton of time “aging” things to make them look more realistic and less “pristine.” I don’t even want to think about the time I spent adding dirt and grime to the floor in the queue…

  5. chris, love your work – beyond amazing so far…

one note on the robert mccall sea castle art … this is actually not the final rendering used in the futureport windows … i’ll look through my files and see if i can find an image for you…

    email me anytime …

  6. Hey Spencer – big fan of you work. Mind if I ask which program you primarily modeled and rendered in? I’m modeling in Sketchup and rendering in Indigo. Eventually I’ll move over to 3DSMax for the more ‘organic’ stuff. What’s great about Indigo as a renderer, is that it’s inbiased – meaning that I light the scene in exactly the way you would in real life. The drawback of course is that renders take FOREVER. Good thing I got a fancy computer! As far as the portal goes, it’s hard to get a feel for exactly how these were actually lit, because there is such a dramatic difference between the portal’s brightness and the rooms darkness. And of course, to make matters worse, I don’t have any ‘in person’ memories of my own to judge with. I’ll definitely lower the brightness though – among other things. This is still a work in progress.

  7. Oh really? I know the sea castle artwork is in the ‘far’ portal and not the center one that’s shown here – for now, all three portals are using the sea castle artwork as a placeholder. But I didn’t realize the artwork I have isn’t final (I pulled it from Martin’s ultimate tribute video). If you have the real deal, PLEASE email to me! ChrisWallaceTSG@Gmail.com

    Thanks Allen!

  8. The images I’m using are definitely vivid – but I want to capture the ‘real’ experience of Horizons. So if everyone’s memory is of them being a bit muted/faded, that’s the way I think mine should be. Thoughts?

  9. The rendering that you are using was seen in some of the early advertising for the pavilion. but not the Futureport. Both were designed by Robert McCall. The final design features a slightly different undersea structure – more oval. I’m searching through my photo archives for a good pic of it. Until then, the final rendering can be seen in this animation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMjuyFrfnc8 15 sec mark.

  10. chris – just sent you an email with the sea castle art – hope this helps !! allen

  11. Wow! Very good. I love your work!

I don’t really remember Horizons too well, but I loved it. :)

I would make the floor have some more dust & dirt to it. Not too much, but it shouldn’t look perfect.

  12. Just stumbled upon your site. Great idea and I love that you are using open source software. I worked at WDW in the late 80′s and Horizon’s was one of my favorite Future World attractions.

I have the Inner Space DVD and when I run it on my home theater setup (my screen is 6 X 8) it actually feels like you are there!

    Good luck!
